Wu Qu (Wealth Star)
Wu Qu (武曲) is the martial wealth star of Zi Wei Dou Shu, standing for determination, decisive action, and financial drive. It is the classical lord of the Wealth Palace (財帛主), and its temperament is that of a general who earns through discipline and execution rather than luck or charm.
Core nature
Wu Qu is yin metal, and metal here means edge: firmness, resolve, and the ability to cut through hesitation. Keywords are execution, endurance, practicality, and money handled seriously. Wu Qu people are doers who trust results over talk, keep their word, and respect competence. The classical texts add a harder note: the star is short on soft words. It can read as stern or unromantic, and older texts label it a solitary star (寡宿之性), meaning feelings are shown through provision and reliability rather than tenderness. Its risk is rigidity, decisions made fast and defended long after the facts have moved on.
In the Life Palace (命宮)
Wu Qu in the Life Palace (命宮) classically describes a resolute, hardworking, financially capable person, often with a steady hand under pressure and a preference for tangible fields: finance, engineering, operations, military and uniformed services, skilled trades. The texts traditionally read the star as better suited to careers of action than of diplomacy, and note that such people often prefer earning their own way early rather than depending on family. The growth theme is softness: learning to negotiate, to express warmth aloud, and to treat compromise as strategy rather than defeat. Some older texts considered Wu Qu harsher in a woman's chart; modern practitioners largely read it simply as strong-willed competence.
Bright vs dim (廟旺 vs 落陷)
Bright (廟旺), especially in Chen and Xu or beside Tian Fu (天府), Wu Qu reads as clean financial strength: earning through skill, managing money well, and building steadily. Dim or fallen (落陷), the same decisiveness loses its judgement, and the classics warn of money friction, hasty commitments, and force applied where patience was needed. The star reacts strongly to company: with Lu Cun (祿存) or Hua Lu (化祿) its wealth nature is amplified, while Wu Qu with Hua Ji (化忌) is one of the textbook signatures for financial stress, blocked cash flow, or disputes over money, and calls for conservative planning.
Classic combinations
With Tian Fu (天府) in Zi or Wu, the general guards the treasury: one of the most stable wealth structures in the system. With Tan Lang (貪狼) in Chou or Wei, the famous Wu Tan (武貪) pairing is read as late blooming, with fortunes that accelerate after early-middle age, and it can ignite into sudden gains beside Huo Xing (火星) or Ling Xing (鈴星). With Tian Xiang (天相) it becomes disciplined administration. With Qi Sha (七殺) in Mao or You, metal doubles and the chart turns forceful and risk-tolerant. With Po Jun (破軍) in Si or Hai, earning comes through upheaval, ventures, and reinvention.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Wu Qu star good or bad?
Wu Qu is classed as an auspicious wealth star, one of the strongest indicators of earning power and follow-through. Its downside is temperamental rather than financial: sternness, inflexibility, and a communication style that can feel cold, especially in relationship palaces or when afflicted by Hua Ji (化忌).
What does Wu Qu in the Marriage Palace (夫妻宮) mean?
Classically a capable, hardworking, strong-willed spouse and a partnership that runs on duty and reliability more than romance. The traditional advice is later marriage and deliberate softness, since two firm wills sharing one roof need negotiated space. It is a workable placement, just not a honeyed one.
Wu Qu or Tian Fu: which is the stronger money star?
They rule different halves of wealth. Wu Qu is the earning star: aggressive, active, income through effort and decisiveness. Tian Fu is the keeping star: storage, management, and preservation. Classically the ideal is both functions covered, which is why their pairing in Zi or Wu is so highly rated.
