Wood 3 bureau (木三局)
The Wood 3 bureau (木三局) is one of five five-element bureaus, taken from the nayin element of your Life Palace. It places Zi Wei in your chart and starts your ten-year luck cycles at age 3, so your decades run 3, 13, 23, 33 and onward.
What the bureau actually decides
Two things, both structural. The bureau number combines with your lunar birth day to fix Zi Wei's seat, and every other major star is then placed relative to it, so the bureau is the hinge the entire chart hangs on. It also sets the age your first decade opens, which for Wood 3 is 3. Everything a reading says about which chapter you are in, when the current one ends and what the next palace brings is downstream of that single number.
What Wood 3 does not mean
It is not a personality verdict and it is not your birth-year element. The bureau comes from the nayin of the Life Palace's stem and branch together, which is why it frequently differs from the element people already associate with their birth year. Nothing about being Wood 3 makes a person flexible, growing or green. The temperament in a chart comes from the stars occupying the Life Palace and its triangle; the bureau's contribution is placement and timing.
Reading the timing
Wood 3 sits near the fast end of the five. Compared with a Fire 6 chart, a Wood 3 chart crosses each decade boundary three years earlier, which matters most when someone is close to a transition: at 32 a Wood 3 chart has just opened a new decade, while Fire 6 at the same age still has three years of the old one to run. If a reading and your own sense of where you are disagree, the bureau is the first thing to check.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wood 3 better than the other bureaus?
No. The five bureaus are not ranked; they place the stars and set the decade timings differently, and none is stronger. Any judgement about a chart's strength comes from the stars and their brightness, not from which bureau produced their positions.
Can my bureau be different from my birth-year element?
Yes, and it usually is. The bureau is taken from the nayin of the Life Palace, which depends on your birth month, day and hour as well as the year, so it regularly differs from the element people know from their zodiac year.
Where do I see my bureau?
In the centre of a computed chart, alongside the decade ranges. It cannot be worked out from your birth year alone because the Life Palace has to be located first.
